Burning mouth syndrome

Burning mouth syndrome (BMS also termed glossodynia,[1] orodynia,[2] oral dysaesthesia,[3] glossopyrosis,[3] stomatodynia,[1] burning tongue,[4]stomatopyrosis,[3] sore tongue,[3] burning tongue syndrome,[5] burning mouth,[3] orsore mouth)[6] is the complaint of a burning sensation in the mouth where no underlying dental or medical cause can be identified and no oral signs are found.[3] Burning mouth syndrome may also comprise subjective xerostomia (a dry mouth sensation where no cause can be found such as reduced salivary flow), oral paraesthesia (e.g. tingling) and altered taste or smell (dysgeusia and dysosmia).[3]
